Engraving Voices/Woodblock Print Workshop

Updated: Feb 14, 2023

PUMPQUAKES has been researching the printmaking scene in Oaxaca since 2020. It was two spaces with interaction with Southeast Asian printmaking collectives that gave us access to printmaking. These were InfoShop IRA in Shinjuku and the print studio analog in Sendai.

In an attempt to lay the groundwork for group printmaking in their own region, the IRA-based printmaking collective A3BC will hold a printmaking workshop at analogue.

Participants will make postcard-sized woodblock prints. Basic techniques can be learned from the instructor. Books and prints that may be useful as motifs for the prints will be available at the venue. Tools such as an engraver will be provided, so please come dressed warmly and in clothes you don't mind getting dirty.

A3BC (Anti-War, Anti-Nuclear and Arts of Blockprint Collective) formed in the summer of 2014 at IRREGULAR RHYTHM ASYLUM (IRA), an infoshop in Shinjuku, Tokyo.

Our foundation was inspired by blockprint collectives in Southeast Asia, such as Pangrok Sulap (Sabah, Malaysia) Taring Padi (Yogyakarta, Indonesia) as well as Marginal (Jakarta, Indonesia). We have learned a lot about the skills and joys of collective printmaking from our friendship with these collectives.

Although A3BC stood for “Anti-War” “Anti-Nuclear power” and made artwork with such themes in the beginning, we now address a wider range of social justice issues with our blockprints.
